University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s mechanical engineering courses are among the best in the United States. The University’s Engineering Department is part of the Big Ten Conference which is the “Ivy League” of Engineering Colleges (ECs) in the United States, according to Brent Schmoker, Nebraska’s international recruitment specialist. “In comparison to large engineering colleges like Michigan and Purdue, Nebraska’s Mechanical Engineering only has more or less 700 students, which enables the university to give them more attention and opportunities for job placement.”

Mechanical engineering students are guided in designing, developing and installing power-producing machines, components and systems. Students can design actual products such as toys, devices, gadgets, vehicles, instruments and furniture. The mechanical and materials engineering program is housed at Nebraska Hall, a building with state-of-the-art facilities that include laboratories for design, modeling, measurement and controls, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and heat transfer, materials, computer and research.

Nebraska lists a 94% placement rate. It has also reported that the average starting salary of its graduates is at US$60,000 and goes up to over US$100,000 after acquiring at least 5 years of work experience. Recent employers included Union Pacific Railroad, Hamilton-Sunstrand, Omaha Public Power District, Kelloggs, Pella, Ford Motor Company, Nestle and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
